Gas Cars Could Get 74 M.P.G. by 2035, Researcher Says

NY Times -- A new report from a University of Michigan researcher estimates that, even without going electric, U.S. cars and trucks could achieve an average efficiency of 74 miles per gallon by 2035. Compared to a federal 2005 Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) baseline, that’s a tripling of fuel economy.

Under the researcher’s fuel economy projections, the average car in 2035 would save 5,254 gallons over its lifetime compared to a similar 2005 vehicle, and would emit 47 tons less carbon dioxide......

FuelBarge: I agree, the additives have really cut down on MPGs, even though most ppl don't believe that.

When gasoline did not have MTBE or Ethanol in it in the summer time (early 2000's), my 2000 Honda Insight could get to 74MPG on my commute without much difficulty.

Could get that gas mileage now except that oil companies bought out the patent on that high mileage carburetor many years ago. That is due to expire sometime in the reasonably distant future or else someone will develop a similar technology.

It's been 24 yrs since my 86 Escort(carburator) got a reliable 40 mpg on the highway, so 50 yrs to 74 should be doable .

few people are willing to buy a car with fuel economy at the far edge, thus innovation will lag to sales.

Based on the fact that I had a 1995 Ford Escort (until someone hit me and totaled it) that got 45/48 MPG (stick shift) - we should have been able to hit 75 MPG quite some time ago.
Car manufacturers decided we weren't interested, and built faster/larger vehicles that devoured more gasoline :(

This greatly depends on how much influence the oil companies have over the auto makers.

They can make cars to get 100 MPG now if they want. About carbon dioxide do you know without it we would not be able to live.

notice the article said COULD achieve that mileage--there were engines available in the 1970's that could do this number and more but the patent rights were bought up by big oil and laid on a shelf to gather dust and NEVER be produced. Engine that can do 75 MPG or better would KILL gasoline industry.

Take the pollution crud off the cars and you'll see MPG increase about 20 percent alone. Take all the extra weight and luxury add on out and increase it another 10 percent minimal. Only cars getting the above figure will be very SMALL cars!

I think we're moving way faster than that! 2035 is a long time from now, when we are talking about technology. I think this country will have the average vehicle reaching pretty close to 74 miles per gallon in the next 10 years, or maybe even less.

Cars under 3,000 lbs (Civic,Corolla,Focus,Hyundais) could be getting that now if they were tuned properly for it. And the auto companies not in bed with Big Oil !!

I would think they would get more than 74 M.P.G.before 2035. Why not get that by 2020 since we have made so much progress in 4 years?

Cars should already be getting at least 60 mpg based on the fact that a 1982 vehicle I had owned got 32+ mpg on a consistent basis back in 1982 to 1993.
